Déjà vu Kerria japonica "Pleniflora" AKA Japanese Yellow Rose

"Untitled 503" Canon FTb Scanned 8 x 12 print

Notes on "Untitled 503"

This is another shot of the Kerria Japonica "Pleniflora" AKA Japanese Yellow Rose, but with different intentions from the previous shot "untitled 501".  Again the flower is placed centre stage but this time I was less interested in the flower and more interested in capturing the various textures and tonalities created by the different kinds of foliage branches and stems. The jagged leaf belongs to the Kerria Japonica "Pleniflora" AKA Japanese Yellow Rose. The second type of leaf is thick and oblong in shape and is of a Rhododendron mix. You can see an example from my previous work here "Rhododendron Snow Hill".

The foliage of the Rhododendron Photographs fantastically in black and white providing a weighted texture that is more interesting then a solid black or grey. I've used everything here for the background and as you can see the sturdy vertical branches of the Rhododendron play well against the frail stems of the Kerria Japonica "Pleniflora" AKA Japanese Yellow Rose.

The Rhododendron (Meaning  Rose Tree in ancient Greek) specie is a shrub and depending on the species (there are over a thousand) they can range from 1 to 30 metres in height. This one that provides the background to "Untitled 503" is roughly 5 metres high. The flowers are very showy and over the top and come in various colours including white, red, pink, purple and yellow.

You can of course have a look to see for yourself by clicking the above link.

I shall be posting another discount code for the online shop over the weekend so make sure you keep an eye on the blog to get it or you can click the official Golden Frog Studio Facebook page like button to the left and the code will appear directly on your Facebook feed.

I am still painting and working on a series of new photographs. I'm off to see CW Stoneking play live tonight, if you don't know who he is then search him on YouTube he's pretty good.
Enjoy the weekend.

Blossom Tree

"Untitled 502" Canon FTb Scanned 8 x 12 print

Notes on "Untitled 502"
Taken with the Canon FTb 35mm using Ilford 400.
Blossom is a frequent sight in this particular location but not in October which is when this was shot. I went back last week and the blossom had died off. I know the weather has been unusual this year anyone who grows vegetables\fruits will tell you that. I think the unusual warm weather in September and October caused a bit of a fake growth spurt in plants, I myself managed to squeeze in another crop of potatoes and Strawberries.

The 15% off orders discount ended on Friday and I am happy to say it went well. I would like to say Thank you to everyone who took the opportunity to purchase a print, it means a lot to me that people like my work enough to buy.

Because of the success of the discount code I will be adding another code soon so keep an eye on the blog or you can add the official Golden Frog Studio Facebook page by either clicking the like button on the left or go here. The discount codes will then appear on your Facebook feed.

The Frequently Asked Questions section is now up an running over at the online shop you can check it here. Any more questions let me know and I shall add them.

Kerria japonica "Pleniflora" AKA Japanese Yellow Rose

"Untitled 501" Canon FTb Scanned 8 x 12 print

Notes on "Untitled 501"

Taken with the Canon FTb 35mm using Ilford 400.
The Kerria japonica "Pleniflora" AKA Japanese Yellow Rose happens to be one of my favourite plants to shoot. The fragile stems hold a mass of these fantastic ruffled yellow spherical flowers. The shrub can grow up to five feet tall and if left wild the stems will spread out into a zigzag pattern. The flower blossoms numerous times throughout the year and is quite a stunning sight especially when illuminated by the evening sun.

I have shot this plant at least 100 times this year alone using digital (Canon EOS 500D), Film black and white and various colour films. My favourite colour film thus far being the Kodak Ektar 100. Next month I promise to show a few variations of the Kerria japonica "Pleniflora.

Emphasis is placed on the play of light on the flower and stem, I wanted a singular flower to take centre stage while having the main stem in focus to drag the eye through the image. I chose to shoot in black and white rather then colour as I wanted a strong sense of tone as well as shape with attention drawn to the flower.

I will eventually take more photographs of the Kerria japonica "Pleniflora not because I am unhappy with my previous captures but because visually this plant offers numerous possibilities, that are too alluring to ignore.

Do not forget you can still claim your 15% off orders using the discount code:WNXAMH at the checkout. Offer expires Friday 11th November.

Dandelion AKA Pissy Bed Ilford 400 35mm

"Untitled 500" Canon FTb Scanned from 8 x 12 print

Okay since I have not added any text lately the guilt is beginning to set in. I'm gonna talk a little about my latest photograph (above) and some other things hopefully I don't bore ye. I am going to post over the next two weeks or so a collection of photographs I took last month over a two day period. My interest was in shape, texture, tonality and negative space.

Notes on "Untitled 500"

Although the Dandelion takes centre stage it is the background of grass that was what I most wanted to capture. The texture and tonality is what I feel brings the image together and makes what would have been a mundane image interesting.

Dandelion known in Ireland as Pissy bed, The tale of the Pissy bed Pluck the Dandelion from the ground and the culprit will wet the bed once they go to sleep. It seems stupid as an adult but as a child it was deadly serious.
As a kid when I told people about this in England they just stared at me as if I had a screw loose. It seems the majority had never heard of this and like most of the world see the Dandelion as a nuisance weed. The term "Pissy bed" has credence in that the Dandelion leaves eaten or stewed  and drank like a tea is a diuretic helping the body to flush out excess fluid. But simply picking it will not cause you to wet the bed.

The Dandelion is far more then a weed, The entire plant is edible and can be consumed in various ways, containing vitamins A B C and D as well as sources of Iron and Potassium. The root is used by Herbalists to detoxify the Liver and the leaves to help in kidney function. The sap inside the stem ( milky white substance) is also used in the treatment of warts, Blisters, boils and calluses.

You can also make Dandelion Beer and wine. If you do decide to try Dandelions then approach with caution especially if you are currently on any medicine as Dandelion when consumed will flush it out of your system fast.

If you live in England and have heard of the Dandelion being referred to as a Pissy bed then let me know.
I'm back painting at the moment, nothing major just playing around with some techniques. I also finally got the Greetings Cards and Postcards completed and they can be purchased through the online shop, Let me know what ye think.
